The menopause is a developmental stage in a woman’s life. A time when she moves into her power… As women reach the age of transition, they have the potential to become teachers of wisdom. Menopause is an initiation into this stage, when regeneration of the young transforms into regeneration of wisdom.’ – Melissa Assilem
The Menopause is a Greek word meaning ‘top rung of the ladder’. This word really means the ending of periods, but it is now used to refer to the entire time of change. This transformation can take 6 months to several years, although it can happen quickly and quietly. It is the time when ovaries stop producing eggs and there is a considerable change in the production of hormones in the body.
Menopause has often been regarded as a ‘disease’ defined by the symptoms that women may experience. However, it is an important and normal stage of development in women’s lives. Some researchers suggest that the post-menopausal years are important as a time to take the last child into maturity and help with young grandchildren.
In ancient and older traditions, post-menopausal women were regarded as wise women or the elders of the tribe. These women passed on the religious meaning of life, the knowledge of plants, healing and collective wisdom.
Nature has provided an abundance of plants and herbs to support women through this transition. Herbal remedies that help symptoms such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness, breast tenderness, anxiety and hormonal balance.
Note: some of these herbs may not be suitable for women with hormone sensitive conditions such as breast or ovarian cancer or a history of liver disease. Please consult a herbal specialist before using these herbs.
There are many homeopathic remedies that help with physical, emotional and mental conditions. Flower essences such as Bach ‘Walnut’ also support the emotional state of transition.
The adrenal glands produce hormones such as oestrogen when levels decline during perimenopause. As stress can deplete the adrenal glands and inhibit their ability to boost hormones, stress reduction, such as breathing, meditation, or exercise is vital. Liquorice root, Ginseng and Wild Oats (Avena Sativa) are examples of herbs that support the adrenal glands. There are also many homeopathic remedies that calm the nervous system and support the adrenals, including Kali Phos, Passiflora and Valeriana.
Bones need extra support after menopause due to lower levels of oestrogen. In addition to weight bearing exercise and taking Vitamin D and calcium there are herbs that offer support such as Red Sage, Red Clover, Horsetail, Thyme, Turmeric and homeopathic remedies such as Calc Phos and Calc Flour.
In addition to flower essences which support many types of emotional issues and mental states, meditation and mindfulness practices help by relaxing the body, easing stress and taking a pause from everyday life.
Change often begins with a small, intentional step. This is an invitation to explore what might support you right now, and to begin from where you are.
