The ‘vital force’ is a term used by the founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, and is a central concept in homeopathy. Vital force is a dynamic, non-physical energy which animates living organisms. According to Hahnemann, if the vital force is out of balance or disturbed, illness or disease results.
The aim of homeopathy is to restore balance to a person’s vital force which is responsible for the body’s capacity to respond to illness, to heal and adapt to changes in the environment. Homeopathic remedies are vibrational medicine that can be used to stimulate and balance the subtle body or energetic vehicles of a person for healing purposes.
Remedies are usually made from natural substances which cause a reaction in a person if taken in their raw undiluted state. The substances are diluted in water and shaken to produce the potency required. After this process only the memory or frequency of the substance remains in the water. This is called the Memory of Water which has been and continues to be investigated by many water researchers.
In accordance with the ‘Law of Similars’, a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person can be used (in diluted form) to treat an ill person with similar symptoms. Belladonna (Deadly nightshade) is a poison that causes rashes, fevers, toxicity and worse effects in a healthy person. However, in its diluted and shaken form it helps a person suffering with rashes, redness and swelling, fevers etc.
Homeopathic remedies are made through a process of dilution and succession (shaking) to produce different potencies. The potencies have different vibrational rates and match the physical and subtle bodies of a person as needed. (See Table of Potencies below)
Remedies are diluted to x (1:10 ratio), c (1:100) and m (1:1000) and LM (1:50,000) potencies and are used to match the condition of the client. Lower potencies e.g. 6x are used for physical conditions; 30c is the standard potency used for many ailments and chronic conditions and repeated more often. This potency covers physical, emotional and mental issues.
Higher potencies such as 200m and 1m are usually used for acute physical, emotional and mental conditions. Very high potencies such as LM or 50,000m are used for emotional, mental or spiritual conditions. Flower essences are said to have a very high potency higher than LM. (
Examples: biochemical tissue salts which replicate cell salts in the body such as Potassium Phosphate known as Kali Phos (a nerve relaxant) are made in a 6x potency. Sulphur 30c is used for skin conditions. Arnica 200c is used after injuries to prevent bruising. Nat Mur LM helps people who repress their emotions to release their emotions.
Scale | Dilution Ratio | Description |
|---|---|---|
X or D | 1:10 | One part substance to nine parts solvent. A 6X (or 6D) potency means this process was repeated 6 times. |
C or CH | 1:100 | One part substance to 99 parts solvent. A 30C means the process was repeated 30 times. |
M | 1:1000 | A high centesimal potency, e.g., 1M is 1,000C, and CM is 100,000C. |
LM | 1:50,000 | A more delicate scale developed later by Hahnemann, known for its gentle yet deep action with less risk of initial symptom aggravation. |
